Key Updates in the 2025 AHA CPR Guidelines
Here are the most important changes introduced in the 2025 AHA update:
1.New Compression-to-Ventilation Emphasis
For adults, the focus remains on high-qualitychest compressions.
However, there's nowincreased emphasis on timely rescue breathsfor trained rescuers, especially in non-cardiac arrest situations like drowning or opioid overdose.
2.Updated Compression Depth for Children
New research suggests a moreprecise compression depth of 1/3 of the chest diameter, not exceeding 2.4 inches (6 cm), to reduce injury risk while maintaining effectiveness.
3.Infant CPR Technique Adjustment
Forsingle rescuers, the recommended technique has shifted totwo-finger compressionsrather than thumbs encircling the chest — unless two rescuers are present.
4.AED Use for Children Now More Flexible
The AHA now encouragesearlier use of AEDs for infants under 1 year, especially if pediatric settings are available. Automated defibrillators are becoming smarter and safer for younger patients.
5.Opioid Emergency Response Expanded
New guidelines now include updated training onnaloxone administration, recognizing the ongoing rise in opioid-related emergencies across the U.S.
